Internet Marketing Price Increase

Has Internet Marketing become more Expensive?

Over the course of two years, I have noticed several internet marketers increasing the price of their products and membership fees. Some has even doubled their prices! This may add barriers to entry for newcomers to the internet marketing arena. Newcomers have to invest more to start their internet marketing business compared to those that started earlier.

For example:

  • Turbo Membership was only $67, now $97 and there is an announcement that it will increase to $147 in December 2008!
  • Niches In A Box was $97, now with additional Elite Membership at $147
  • PLR Pro was $127, now upgraded to Project Green Button @ $147 which will increase in stages to $167 and $197

The three products above are membership sites that provide members with new products monthly. Some even include features like hosting and autoresponder. Their prices have increased over the years and are set to increase again soon.

Internet Marketing Pricing Strategy

This is actually an internet marketing strategy being used by many seasoned internet marketers where they have learned to increase their sales by adding value to their products and memberships and increasing their prices at the same time.

This kind of strategy actually works if internet marketers can continually improve on their products and add value to their services. Moreover, in this strategy, earlier customers are allowed to keep their memberships at the same lower price they originally signed up with. This can increase loyalty of early members as these members find increasing value to keep their membership. This is because, early members can continue to enjoy improved features at the same price when they first joined the membership which new members have to pay more at the new higher rate.

This is a good strategy to learn from, however, one must be sure to be able to deliver or “over” deliver by adding more products, features and ultimately more value on a continuing basis. As such, new members will then be willing to pay the higher price for what he/she will be receiving in return. If this is not achieved, the products and services of the internet marketer will risk becoming too expensive to new customers.

So the question to the internet marketer is “Can you create enough value to command a higher price?

The three memberships mentioned above have certainly achieved that successfully and from observation, the new standard price seems to be around $147…

New Wave Marketing - The Modern Marketing Principles

hermawan kartajaya My mentor and friend, Pak Hermawan Kartajaya, is the Asean’s Marketing Guru and the Pride of Indonesia.  Since late August of this year, he has been writing about “The New Wave Marketing Series 100” at Kompass.com (Indonesia Online Media).  It is also a great joy to hear that he will co-author with Philip Kotler on a new book with the same title “New Wave Marketing”.

I am sure anyone in the marketing world, especially those that has taken “marketing” in their higher education, will remember the thick blue book of “Principles of Marketing” by Philip Kotler. ( Of course, there has been many new editions of the book that may be of different colors now.)  So there is no need of me to further the introduction of the world famous “Father of Modern Marketing for International Market”

So What’s “New Wave Marketing”?

According to Kartajaya, the famous nine principles of marketing, as we all have learned to know and applied in our marketing strategies, need to be revised and adapt to the modern world today and these new principles will be known as New Wave Marketing.  Whether or not they will actually replaced the old terms from now on has not been announced.

Just to point out, The nine principles of marketing by Kotler also referred as “Legacy Marketing” are:

1. Segmentation,
2. Targeting,
3. Positioning,
4. Differentiation,
5. Marketing-Mix (Product, Price, Place, Promotion),
6. Selling,
7. Brand,
8. Service,
9. Process

12 C’s of “New Wave Marketing”

The new elements or principles has now been termed the 12 C’s of “New Wave Marketing” and they are:

1. Communitization,
2. Confirming,
3. Clarifying,
4. Coding,
5. Crowd-Combo (Co-Creation, Currency, Communal Activation, Conversation),
6. Commercialization,
7. Character,
8. Caring,
9. Collaboration

The reason why I am posting and sharing this with you is that Internet Marketing Strategies are by and large derived from Marketing Strategies as we have learned and apply in the offline world.  The nine principles of Marketing by Philip Kotler are commonly applied to all businesses in their marketing strategies.

These nine principles have been widely applied in internet marketing by many businesses and internet marketers.  Since these nine principles of marketing will soon be revised to be “NEW WAVE MARKETING“, it is important for us to be aware of these new principles and apply the New Wave Marketing to online businesses and internet marketing in general.

The evolution of New Wave Marketing is actually the result of the development of internet.  And many large successful businesses, who have applied it, has become highly successful including online companies such as FACEBOOK, eBay, Apple and Amazon!

You will be able to understand the new terms better with the illustration below and you will see that the New Wave Marketing is actually a replacement of terms of the Nine Principles of Marketing.

  • Segmentation => Communitization
  • Targeting => Confirming
  • Positioning => Clarifying
  • Differentiation => Coding
  • Marketing-Mix => Crowd-Combo
  • Product => Co-Creation
  • Price => Currency
  • Place =>Communal Activation
  • Promotion => Conversation
  • Selling => Commercialization
  • Brand => Character
  • Service => Caring
  • Process => Collaboration

These new terms described the principles of Marketing better than the previous terms and make more sense in the new world today. The changes in information technology especially the internet has revolutionized how human interact with one another, creating more opportunities as well as threats to all businesses. Just like the 9 principles of Marketing that needs adaption to the new world, we too need to adapt to the New Wave Marketing and apply them to our business to face this new world.

These New Wave Marketing principles, when applied, allows companies to reap huge benefits with sustainable competitive advantage over others.

As an example,  Communitization is the first key of New Wave Marketing. Communities can easily be found on the internet as Online Communities have flourished tremendously over the past years. This can be seen in forums and social networking sites where users created their own community. With communitization principle in mind, marketers can now explore and research potential communities to market their business to.

Kartajaya explains that Communitization is much more effective than Segmentation as markets will not only be based on geography, demography or social backgrounds in traditional segmentation. BUT, markets will now be based on groups of people with the same passion or interest from all walks of life from anywhere around the world as communities.

If a company can apply communitization and gain the trust and love of communities, then these communities will volunteerily help market the company and defend the company from critisims coming from outside the community.

Marketers need to be aware of these new principles, gain better understanding and apply these New Wave Marketing in order to reap bigger benefits.

The 100 essays of New Wave Marketing are still developing at Kompas.com as I write this post. However, they are written in Bahasa Indonesia, you will need to wait for the new book with Kotler to gain deeper understanding about this New Wave.

Applying New Wave Marketing Principles

Blogging to The Bank 3 Review

Blogging to The Bank Version 3.0!

This is only a few internet marketing books that actually launched a version 3.

I read through the book and find that it is very informative for any newbie to start a blog and make money from their blogs. However, if you are an experienced internet marketer and has kept yourself updated with the latest internet marketing trends like web 2.0, SEO, article marketing and so on. You may not find the book useful.

Blogging to the Bank 3.0 is written more for newbies in mind, for someone who has no clue on setting up a blog, or for those people whose blogs are not making them any money at all.

blogging to the bank 3The book explains in detail on how to set up a blog, optimize them for reader and search engines and doing keyword research for your blog.

How to get content for your blog - Rob reveals his secret weapon on getting content is from… guess what.. he uses PLRpro for his PLR articles. PLRpro may be expensive but the quality is top notch especially when the membership comes with automatic site builders, wordpress auto posting, article marketing automation, social bookmarking etc. Another cheaper alternative is SimplyPLR a new service providing PLR articles that can be spinned at less than 30% of PLRpro.

It then describe how you can monetize your blog mentioning various methods and programs that you can make money for your blog.

Traffic building methods paid as well as Free methods are highlighted including how to get your blog indexed within 48 hours by search engines.

As a summary of my review, I find it similar to version 2 with some updates on new trends and techniques in internet marketing strategies. As I have said, if you had version 2 and that you have kept yourself up to date with the latest internet marketing strategies, then you wont need this book.

Not that the book is useless, since I must confessed I learnt several key strategies when I purchased version 2.

If you are new to blogging and internet marketing, has not set up a blog before, or your current blog is not making you any money, then you will find Blogging to the Bank 3.0 useful.

There is a local pet store here that specializes in pure-breed “pocket” dogs. You know…the cutesy kind that Paris Hilton wannabes stuff in their Gucci bags and walk around in the mall with.

I think these dogs look like rats and gerbils, but to each their own.

These things sell for $1300 and up.

The other day, after reading this thread, I found the website of said dog store and almost had to throw up at how terrible it is.

It is absolutely doing nothing for this persons business. It is the type of site that a business has made up just to say that they have a website and aren’t stuck in the 17th century.

So today I walked in and chatted up the owners, who also mind the store.

I asked them how business was doing and they indicated it was lukewarm, mostly because we are in the post-holiday season.

I then inquired what marketing they were doing:

They have a yellow pages ad and do some local coupon ads twice a year or so.

I then asked how many people come in the store, look around a little bit, and then claim that they’ll come back at a later time when they see a dog they like (their “inventory” of dogs changes weekly).

They said probably 95%. Of these 95% about half take a business card or flyer. Of those half, only about 5% come back and actually end up buying something.

I said not bad but I can improve it, and spent the next hour explaining how…and then signing them up for a 3000 dollar complete site overhaul and 250 monthly fee for hosting and monthly update.

I snatched the monthly fee by offering this service: they have their customers and potential customers sign up for a monthly e-mail update on what they have in stock.

Customers can also go the website and email subscribe, of course.

I come in once a month and film their new inventory (using a Flip Video recorder). I will record about 90 seconds of video footage per mutt (they usually have around 12-15).

Each dog’s video clip gets uploaded to youtube. The monthly email gets put together, with a two or three paragraph blurb about the new dogs they have available and the 12-15 videos embedded in the email.

The effect of this is twofold: customers that have already purchased a dog, will probably check out a video,fall in love with one of the dogs, and rush in to buy it.

Customers who walk in, but don’t like any of the dogs they currently have, can get a monthly audio/visual update on the stores inventory from the comfort of their home or workplace.

So instead of losing a potential buying customer, the store can now put its product in the face of prospects once a month with ease.

I estimate that it will be about 2 or 3 hours of actual labor per month.

If I start getting too busy I know someone who I can pay 50 bucks to do it for me.

So 200 bucks a month for sitting on my ass. Nice.

250 a month is probably cheap. But it’s my first client and I’m learning.

By the way I walked out of the store with a check for $1500. Always get half up front, and wait until it clears before you start.
