But it appears he thinks he can beat him in another way, and perhaps improve his chances at election through it. That's right, Spears has challenged Vitter to an MMA match at the upcoming USA-MMAS "Return of the Champions" event at the Cajundome.
"You and other career politicians like yourself, hell-bent on ruining this nation, have blood on your hands," Spears said. "I think it's time you have blood on your face."
Not sure if that's the kind of thing Louisianans (is Louisianans a word?) want to hear, but guess is that Spears thinks so. Here's something that hardcore MMA fans definitely don't want ... WEC Signs China's Tiequan Zhang To Fight Alex Karalexis - MMA Is About To Explode - The fact that Zuffa has hired former NBA executive Mark Fischer to get MMA going in Asia tells you something. So, by the way, does the fact that the WEC has signed undefeated lightweight Chinese MMA fighter Tiequan Zhang to a contract.
It tells you that MMA is about to explode.
China is an enormous market that is ripe for a sport like MMA. Think of the martial arts history there. We're talking about kung fu, shuai jiao, and the ... Manny Pacquiao Interested In Competing In MMA - Recently, boxing champion Manny Pacquiao spoke with BoxingScene.com's Bill Emes and Michael Marley. When asked about competing in MMA, he had an interesting answer, even if he also noted that the sport was "too brutal."
"I want to (compete in MMA) but they [promoters and management] don't want me to fight," he said.
Pacquiao is a great boxer that is in his prime, which would make him different than James Toney. But that won't help him defeat a solid MMA fighter with a good game plan as things currently stand. However, if he were to really train in MMA for a while, well, then we'd be in for a possible treat.
In other words, I'd love to see a Pacquiao with some takedown defense and basic Brazilian Jiu Jitsu skills try his hand at the sport... Josh Koscheck Angry At Referee Yves Lavigne For Supposed Comments, Doesn't Want Him To Ref His Fights - Updated Note 9/9/10: Yves Lavigne is saying that he did not make the statements attributed to him in Le Journal de Montreal about the upcoming Georges St. Pierre-Josh Koscheck fight and more. You can see the transcript of what he allegedly voiced at Watch Kalib Run. If he didn't say these things, someone has a pretty big apology to make.
Furthering all of this, here's what Lavigne stated via David Simon's Twitter account (Ringside Report Host):
"I NEVER gave an interview to that journalist. I NEVER gave an interview regarding GSP vs Koscheck. My lawyer is taking care of this matter."

USA Trio Wins Team Kata Competition at Junior Pan American Karate Championship - A team from the USA National Karate Federation had never won a gold medal at an International Karate Championship. That is, until now. You see, Jasmine Nguyen, Jessica Kwong, and Sapphire Bang teamed to win a gold medal in the 14-17 year old division of the Team Kata competition at the Junior Pan American Karate Championship in Montreal, Canada (August 20-22).
"Other countries have always had a Girls Kata Team, and this year was the first for the U.S., so we came in as a surprise for the other countries," Nguyen said, according to an article at OCRegister.com. But it was probably more than that, as... Frank Edgar Defeats BJ Penn By Unanimous Decision, Leaves No Doubt That He's The Best - Some fans left their first fight at UFC 112 believing that BJ Penn had won. No one left UFC 118 thinking that way. Yep, Frank Edgar is still the UFC lightweight champion.
Early on, Edgar took Penn down hard after getting hit as he came inside. Penn got up without sustaining any damage several moments later. Then Edgar popped Penn with a couple of strikes Read more ... Randy Couture Defeats James Toney By Arm Triangle Choke At UFC 118 - James Toney sure had a lot to say coming into his UFC 118 bout with Randy Couture. Not known for a lot of talking himself, Couture apparently couldn't help but chime in with the following:
"We'll see how much he's talking when he's laying on his back and I'm punching him in his face,"
Everyone knew the deal coming in. If Couture was able to put Toney on his back, it would be over soon. If things stayed standing, Toney would be victorious. Get ready, get set, go!
It took only about 15 seconds before Couture shot in and took Toney down with a low single leg. From there, he mounted his boxing foe. Then came a slow and steady diet of ground and pound before Couture decided to press Toney into the cage. Then came the choke. At first,... Nate Diaz Chokes Marcus Davis Out At UFC 118 - Coming into their UFC 118 encounter, many predicted that the battle between Marcus Davis and Nate Diaz would take home fight of the night. And boy, oh boy, did that crowd go crazy for Davis, a fellow New Englander, as he made his walk to the cage.
Davis connected with a left early on as Diaz taunted him. Diaz then connected with a jab and a left. Perhaps Davis didn't like the taunting, as he came forward with a hard left-right combination that left Diaz on the canvas, eating punches for a moment while there. Thick layers of what turn out, on closer inspection, to be delicate, hexagonal crystals line the walls and ceiling. I and a handful of other visitors are in the basement laboratory of the Permafrost Institute in Yakutsk; according to the red numbers of an LED panel, the temperature is -8 °C. After a few minutes, our presence ? breathing, talking ? has raised the temperature to -7 °C, and we are u... Jonathan Steele: Neo-Taliban - The road from Kabul to Kandahar was once known as the Eisenhower highway. Built in the 1950s, when the United States and the Soviet Union competed peacefully for Afghan friendship, this US-funded 300-mile ribbon of tarmac was plied for two decades by lorries and garishly painted buses with no concern for security. Among the passengers were half-stoned Western hippies on the overland trail through Asia. Then came civil war and in 1979 the Soviet i... Jenny Turner: Tom McCarthy?s ?C? - For the final part of this novel?s first movement, our young hero, Serge Carrefax, travels to Klod?brady?, a presumably Austro-Hungarian spa town, to take a cure. It?s 1913, and Serge is two years older than the century. His problem is ?a blockage?, ?encumbrances? in his bowel. ?Morbid matter ? Bad stuff ? black bile: mela chole,? the doctor says. ?Your illness is not a thing; it is a process. A rhythm. Toxins are secreted around body, organs bec... Learn to draw dogs in colored pencil, following this step by step tutorial by artist Janet Griffin-Scott. Janet takes you through the process of designing the dog portrait and building layers of colored pencil to create rich, lifelike textures. What's Really In Your Sketchbook? - While I keep intending to make my sketchbooks just for drawing and keep other notes separate, it never works out that way. In no time it's full of scribbled quotes from the whatever book I'm reading (currently, How Philosophy Can Save Your Life by Marietta McCarty), notes about art history, postcards from the art gallery and various newspaper clippings.
For me creativity is very much a holistic process. Reading from all sorts of sources, as well ... An Easy Drawing Lesson - Here's an easy lesson in drawing from life - sketch a piece of fruit in pencil. Drawing from life is the best way to develop confidence and more importantly, develop your own style - not slavishly copying a photograph or someone else's art. This easy beginner lesson is ideal for people who claim they "can only draw stick figures", and it's a great warm-up or refresher for more experienced artists, too.

Draw Portraits in Pencil - Not Plastic - Structure and anatomy are topics I constantly return to - and once again today, while searching for an image, found what should have been a really nice celebrity portrait, spoiled by the melted-plastic-doll effect. It happens when you've gone straight for the detail, without using any kind of structure. Variations of tone and slight errors in placement make it look as though the subject is a plastic model - no bones, just skin - and left too long... Drawing Architecture - If you're including architectural features in your sketches, a solid grasp of perspective drawing is critical. You don't have to do anything fancy - just understand how perspective 'works'. If you trust your eyes and draw what you see, you shouldn't run into any trouble; but often we subconsiously try to 'correct' things and so create errors. Understanding the basics of perspective will help you identify and issues.
Straight lines can be a probl... Draw Dogs' Eyes - Even non-artists will tell you that the eyes are the most important part of a portrait. Human or animal, getting the eyes right is critical both in terms of realism, and in capturing the character and spirit of the subject. In this tutorial on drawing dogs' eyes, Janet Griffin-Scott shows you how to build the layers of detail and color to create vivid, expressive eyes in colored pencil. In this example, she is drawing a portrait of a German Sheph... Advice for Graphic Design Art Students - When I was an art student, we thought that Design students were too hip for their own good, envied their access to the computer lab and resented them for Selling Out to The Man. These days though, the arts are far more integrated. Fine Artists use typography and create design, industrial designers make art - and we all appreciate the importance of actually making a living from what we do. I love the word 'creatives' used to describe people who wo... Keys to Drawing with Imagination - Most of the drawing books I recommend are 'how to' books full of step-by-step demonstrations. Bert Dodson's 'Keys to Drawing with Imagination' is a little different. It explored the process of creativity and is loaded with ideas and examples - it's a very visual resource. He looks how to take a starting point such as a shape, pattern or object - and give it a twist to create something exciting. His thoughts on creativity are really useful. I rec... Draw a Superhero - Draw a classic comic book superhero following this short tutorial by Shawn Encarnacion. Modeled along the lines of our favorite Marvell superheroes, this dynamic comic book super hero combines a powerful look with graceful action. Shawn's example shows you how to use a simple skeleton-like framework to establish the pose before completing the outline drawing. Experienced artists can modify the drawing to create their own look while less practice... Tinted Charcoal - I love charcoal drawing, and love subtle colors - so when Starrpoint* mentioned Derwent's Tinted Charcoal range my interest was piqued. They look absolutely gorgeous and I'm curious to see how the colored undertones will work with the dense, velvety black that charcoal usually gives. I've tried the Graphitint tinted graphite pencils, and found them quite interesting but tricky, with the bright undertones being difficult to control with water. I h...
