Sprint Q4 sales rise, margins tumble on iPhone launch - (Telecompaper) US mobile operator Sprint Nextel reported a jump in subscriber growth in the fourth quarter thanks to the launch of iPhone sales, while the costs of introducing the Apple handset and upgrading its network pushed margins lower. The company had its best subscriber additions in six years, adding a net 1.6 million customers for a record of over 55 million at year-end. Helped by the sale of 1.8 million iPhones, revenues rose 5 percent year-on-year to USD 8.72 billion. However, adjusted OIBDA fell 36 percent to USD 842 million. Sprint estimates the iPhone and network costs took 8.8 percent points of the margin, reducing it to 10.8 percent. As a result, the company's net loss widened to USD 1.40 billion from USD 929 million a year earlier. That also includes another USD 135 million impairment charge on its stake in Clearwire. Bharti Airtel quarterly revenues rise 17%, margins improve - (Telecompaper) Bharti Airtel reported higher revenues and improving margins for the fiscal third quarter to December, while net profit fell due to higher taxes. Revenues were up 17.1 percent from a year earlier to INR 184.77 billion (USD 3.65 billion). In India and South Asia, revenues rose 12.1 percent, while the African operations improved sales 16.1 percent. The EBITDA margin rose to 32.2 percent from 31.7 a year ago, driven by an improvement of over 7 percentage points in Africa. While pretax profit was up 2 percent, net profit fell to INR 10.1 billion from INR 13.0 billion. Operating free cash flow for the first nine months of the fiscal year reached INR 62.8 billion, supported by a move to positive cash flow in Africa. Renesas, Fujitsu, Panasonic plan chips merger - report - (Telecompaper) Renesas Electronics, Fujitsu and Panasonic have entered the final phase of negotiations to merge their semiconductor operations, The Nikkei reported without naming its sources. The companies expect to have a deal by the end of March and sign the final contract in the autumn, the paper said. The joint venture will specialize in the design and development of chips for smartphones and other devices and is backed by cash from Innovation Network Corporation of Japan, a government-backed fund. The companies aim to improve their global competitiveness by spinning off the manufacturing business into a joint venture between Global Foundries and the Innovation Network. The latter is a government-backed fund which is already participating in a similar merger of the small display businesses of Toshiba, Sony and Hitachi.... Nokia to cut 4,000 jobs at smartphone factories - (Telecompaper) Nokia announced plans to cut 4,000 jobs as part of a restructuring of its manufacturing operations. Factories in Komarom, Hungary, Reynosa, Mexico and Salo, Finland, will be affected. The measures follow a review of smartphone manufacturing operations, announced by Nokia last September. This forms part of attempts by the handset maker to catch up in the smartphone market, where it has been losing share to Samsung and Apple. The three factories will in future focus on smartphone product customization, serving customers mainly in Europe and the Americas. Device assembly will be transferred to Nokia factories in Asia, where the majority of component suppliers are based. Nokia said the move should help it reduce the time to market and more quickly introduce innovations in its smartphones. Telenor posts Q4 loss on Indian charge, sales improve - (Telecompaper) Telenor moved to a net loss of NOK 1.94 billion in the fourth quarter versus a profit of NOK 2.10 billion a year earlier, hurt by an impairment charge of NOK 4.1 billion on its Indian operations and lower profits from its stake in Vimpelcom. The earlier flagged charge follows the cancellation of its Indian mobile licences in a court ruling. The operator's quarterly revenues improved to NOK 25.43 billion from NOK 24.86 billion a year earlier, as growth in Asia and mobile data services helped offset a slowdown in its home market Norway. Adjusted EBITDA rose to NOK 7.42 billion from NOK 7.18 billion, and the margin edged up to 29.2 percent from 28.9 a year ago. After organic revenue growth of 7 percent over the full year 2011, Telenor said it expects organic sales growth of over 5 percent this year. Google introduces Chrome for Android phones - (Telecompaper) Google is bringing its Chrome web browser to mobile phones. The software will initially launch in beta for smartphones running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Google said Chrome for Android is focused on speed and simplicity, loading search results in the background as the user types, so pages appear 'instantly'. The same as in the Chrome desktop browser, the URL box in the mobile version serves as a search box for Google. Other features include an unlimited number of tabs, which can be swiped through like a deck of cards, zooming in on links for easy selection and privacy settings. The mobile version also syncs with the desktop experience for users who sign in to Chrome. Users can then access tabs left open on the computer, sync book marks and get autocomplete suggestions based on browsing history. Google launched the Chrome desktop browser in 2008. Yahoo! chairman steps down - (Telecompaper) Yahoo! announced further changes to its board of directors, including the resignation of chairman Roy Bostock. After the earlier announced appointment of Scott Thompson as CEO and resignation of co-founder Jerry Yang from the board, Yahoo! said four board members will step down at the next AGM. These are Boystock, Vyomesh Joshi, Arthur Kern and Gary Wilson. Alfred Amoroso, the former CEO of Rovi, and Maynard Webb, chairman and former CEO of LiveOps, will be named to the board as independent directors, and Yahoo! is looking for additional independent directors to expand the board. As a result of the changes, the majority of the board's members will be new after the AGM, and all directors will have joined the board since 2010. The new management comes amid a strategic review started last year at Yahoo!. Tele2 boosts dividends after strong Q4 results - (Telecompaper) Tele2 reported strong growth in fourth-quarter results, led by continued expansion of its mobile activities. The company's sales rose to SEK 10.84 billion from SEK 10.11 billion a year earlier, equal to growth of 8 percent when excluding exchange rate effects. Growth was helped by the takeover of the rest of the Network Norway venture as well as expansion in Kazakhstan and continued strong growth in Russia. Group EBITDA increased to SEK 2.79 billion from SEK 2.49 billion, led by a 38 percent rise in Russia and double-digit growth in the Baltics and Netherlands. The EBITDA margin rose 1 percent point from a year ago to 26 percent. Net profit rose to SEK 1.31 billion from SEK 1.10 billion, and free cash flow increased to SEK 915 million from SEK 614 million. Verizon, Redbox to launch subscription streaming service - (Telecompaper) Verizon and Redbox have partnered to launch an alternative home video service to Netflix. Expected to launch in the second half of this year, the yet-to-be-named service will offer DVD rentals by post from Redbox along with a new subscription-based streaming video service. The companies said the national service will allow consumers to "enjoy the new and popular entertainment they want, whenever they choose, using the media and devices they prefer". This will include viewing both from PCs and mobile devices. Verizon will build on its relationships with entertainment content providers and provide cloud computing and IP infrastructure to support delivery of the streaming service. Consolidated buys SureWest for USD 341 mln - (Telecompaper) US fixed-line operators Consolidated Communications and SureWest have agreed to a merger. Consolidated will acquire SureWest for USD 23 per share in cash or stock, or a total USD 340.9 million excluding debt. This is a 47 percent premium on SureWest's last share price. The combined company will have operations in six states and 1,775 employees, with pro forma revenues of USD 620 million for the twelve months ending 30 September 2011. SureWest serves 130,000 residential subscribers and 15,700 commercial businesses in the greater Kansas City and Sacramento regions over its own fibre networks, which pass in total 321,700 homes. Consolidated offers voice, data and video services to residential and business customers in Illinois, Pennsylvania and Texas. Consolidated said the deal will combine its own strong cash flow with SureWest's growth strategy in fibre services.
